Do you know how the very first easter egg came to be? Not the sweet kind you search for in the garden. But the hidden messages or jokes that we often find in games. Well, if this conversation topic still interests you, then keep on reading (otherwise just skip to the list already).
The easter egg that is most cited as the very first easter egg was featured in a game called Adventure, an action-adventure game that was released on the Atari 2600 in 1980. The easter egg itself was simply the name of the developer Warren Robinett in a secret room. The reason he decided to add this little feature was because developers weren’t often credited in games at the time, so he decided to add his own in the game in secret and so immortalized his name in the game forever.
In light of Easter this year, here’s our list of 5 awesome easter eggs in popular VR games:
Valve’s The Lab
The mini-game in the mini game. After releasing the very popular free game on Steam, The Lab last year, a couple of easter eggs have been noted in the game. One of these is the pink Xortex 28XX arcade machine that lets you play a game that looks a lot like the 8-bit classic, Space Invaders. After shooting all the ‘aliens’ that also double as Valve’s credits, you get a boss fight.
Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham VR
When you find yourself in the Bleake Island alleyway, during the Dead End scene on a fire escape balcony, turn around. You will be able to look into a window in the apartment across from you and there you will see a large green hat hanging on a chair. Also in the room is a small model of a scene from Alice in Wonderland. So if you zoom in and view both of these together, you will unlock a Through the Looking Glass trophy.
Croteam’s Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope
Back in February, Dark Side Of Gaming posted that there’s an easter egg in Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope (available on Steam) which basically reveals the release date for Serious Sam 4. The easter egg is a series of dates on Sam’s weapon that corresponds with Serious Sam game release dates. The last date on the gun is December 2017 and the PC gaming news platform speculated that this is the release date for Serious Sam 4. Since that is the next game that Croteam will be releasing according to the developers. This speculation quickly got a lot of attention and reposts.
Croteam also linked to it in a twitter post not long after. Which lends a lot of credence to what everyone is thinking (or hoping, rather).

Acceleroto’s Zombie Training Simulator
If you shoot the Acceleroto logo on the billboard with the words “Zombie Training Simulator” on it, the game throws you into a simulation loop in an open environment where there’s an endless horde of zombies. You can also of course, just stand there and shoot them to your heart’s content.
Owlchemy Labs’ Job Simulator
Probably one of the most famous easter eggs in a VR game to date is the Dollhouse mode. This mode, along with two others (Bouncy Mode and Zero Gravity Mode) is unlocked after you have completed all of the jobs in the game. To gain access to the modes, you have to look for cartridges with their names in a drawer under the Job cartridge car. Dollhouse mode is not available for PS VR.
