When Skydance Interactive released their mech shooter Archangel for Rift and Vive last year, players were a little disappointed. The studio had promised a big free-roaming game with epic battles between giant machines. Instead, players got an intense on the rails shooter that delivered a polished experience, but wasn’t exactly what players had expected from the game. The development team did not give up, though, and promised a free update dubbed Archangel: Hellfire back in April which would address the issues players have had with the game.
That update has now exited open beta and just landed for everyone who owns a copy of Archangel, along with a free version of the multiplayer game, dubbed Archangel: Hellfire Enlist Free. This free edition gives you access to the entire PvP multiplayer mode of the game, and allows you to participate in the war between the USFF and HUMNX factions.
While the single-player campaign will still be an on the rails experience, the multiplayer package that comes with the Archangel: Hellfire update delivers on the free-roaming gameplay the studio wanted, along with an intense campaign of its own. You can join the conflict between the resistance fighters of the US Free Forces and the autocratic regime known as HUMNX in Team Deathmatch / PvP and Cooperative Mech Assault / PvE modes in two all-new destructible multiplayer maps, including a snowy mountain landscape and an arid desert terrain. Along with the two maps also comes 6 new massive combat mechs for you to trod around in with more than 13 unique weapons and abilities.

“The dream of VR is to allow people to be wholly absorbed in amazing new virtual experiences, and nothing is quite as exciting as piloting a massive six-story-high mech and waging war with your friends. Through the team’s hard work and talent, they have fully realized that awesome experience,” said Peter Akemann, President of Skydance Interactive. “Not only can gamers experience the compelling story campaign of Archangel, but they can put their piloting skills on the line in epic online competitive PvP and cooperative matches with pilots from all over the world.”
To help kick off the war effort, Skydance Interactive and Opera Event will be hosting the Mech Ascent Championship, a Competitive PvP tournament to give pilot teams a chance to compete for $500 weekly prizes and a $2,000 Grand Prize, a custom bomber jacket and a Golden Mech. Starting today, players can make their mark on the game’s Leaderboard and for a chance to earn a place in competition.
If you want to play the free version of the multiplayer game, Archangel: Hellfire Enlist Free is available now to download. The full game, including the single-player mode, Cooperative Mech Assault / horde mode, and six custom mech skins, is now available for $20 on Steam, the Oculus Store, Humble, and Green Man Gaming. No news yet on if or when this update will be coming to PSVR Archangel players as well.
