Surprisingly, strategy games work really well in VR and we’ve seen a multitude of amazing turn-based and real time strategy games released for VR. Some notable ones that come to mind include Hidden Path Entertainments’ Brass Tactics, Skyworld from Vertigo Games, and Animal Force published by Oasis Games. One indie developer is hoping to add his creation to the list of RTS games out there, with a spacey twist. BattlegroupVR is a cosmic take on taking command of a fleet of ships while being part of the battle yourself. It’s almost reminiscent of something out of Star Wars.
In BattlegroupVR you are a battlegroup commander commissioned by the Imperium to put down a rebellion on a backwater colony. You’ll be in charge of configuring your fleet, choosing your ship captains, and commanding the fleet in real time. While you’re on board your selected flagship, in the midst of battle. Developer Ken is looking to release BattlegroupVR in playable early access beta for the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift by the end of the year but has started sharing his progress with the game so far through developer vlogs.
This isn’t a superficial RTS with some simple mechanics, however. The developer is really going for depth, with various customizable ships, equipment, and a training system for captains. You’ll earn battle points while playing the game which you’ll then spend on buying new ships for your loadout, hire new captains and train your captains, who will also level up as they gain more experience. Each captain will have their own special skill, and you’ll have to decide which captains will work well with each other and your strategy.

Most of the gameplay will take place inside the ship you choose to command. You’ll have a holographic table in the middle from which to command your fleet and you’ll see them move around you as they engage in battle from the windows of your ship.
While the battles themselves will undoubtedly be thrilling to witness, you’ll have to keep a level head as you try to find enemy weak spots to exploit and try to keep your fleet alive. Because ships are expensive and losing a ship with upgraded weapons and features will undoubtedly be a big blow. A ship’s captain is also likely to go down with that ship, which means you could lose a valuable person who you’ve been leveling up for a while.
All in all, it sounds like BattlegroupVR is set to be an impressive RTS with some promising features. We’re excited to see what more elements the developer will add as the game nears its release. If you want to keep an eye on this game’s progress then you can check out the official website.
