Tabletop games are more popular than ever these days, in reality, and virtual reality. If people aren’t playing together on social VR apps like AltspaceVR then they’re playing virtual chess or talking about games like Dungeons&Dragons online.
A while ago, VR studio Experiment 7 announced that they’re teaming up with Catan Studio and Asmodee Digital to bring one of the most popular tabletop games out there to virtual reality. The game is coming to Oculus Rift and Gear VR soon, but you could be one of the first to check out the popular board game in all its virtual glory by signing up for the closed beta.
Catan’s original inventor, Klaus Teuber, said that he is “fascinated by what VR has to offer”. He also said that he “never imagined actually stepping into the world of Catan when we first started making cut-outs and dreaming about exploring new lands.” Well, that dream is being realized now.
The game will support cross-platform play and will transport you to a virtual table where you can play the game exactly like you would in real life. Except you can also play against an AI or online.
And finally, Experiment 7 also said that additional VR platforms are to follow, which means that we could see the game adding support for HTC Vive and possible Playstation VR too. We’ll let you know when the final release date for the game is announced. If you want to sign up for the Catan VR closed beta, then you can do so here.
