I’m a sucker for a good pun. So when I heard of Pawn of the Dead, a VR game where you play chess with a bunch of zombies, I was immediately enamored. Chess with Zombies: Pawn of the Dead was first released by California-based developers zChess for mobile earlier this year and now the studio is bringing the cutesy undead title to Oculus Rift.
The game will be coming to Oculus Home’s Early Access channel soon, and let’s you play as either the humans, which represents the white chess pieces, or the zombies, which, of course, represents the black pieces. All of the pieces are animated and interact with each other, almost like Wizard’s Chess from Harry Potter. So if one of your chess pieces are destroyed by the zombies then you’ll be treated to a little show of your little pawns getting violently devoured. Luckily these zombies don’t spread their disease. Can you just imagine how hellishly hard that game of chess would be?
Speaking of difficulty, the game is designed to accommodate a variety of skill levels. The AI has 10 skill levels ranging from complete beginner to tournament level so novices and masters alike should enjoy this one. Chess with Zombies: Pawn of the Dead has a feature that highlights movable pieces and legal moves for those just starting out who want a little assistance in learning the ropes.
No word on if the game will have an online multiplayer as well, though the developers are working on adding online multiplayer support to the mobile version. So one can only hope then I guess. No price tag or final release date for the Oculus Rift version has been announced yet, but we’ll keep you updated.
