To The Top is a climbing/platform game by Electric Hat Games that will release for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift on Steam tomorrow, 18 May.
In the game, you get to climb, leap, skate, slide and fly to complete over 30 levels in a city-like environment. Your hands, which are your main tools for moving around in the game, act like little red magnets that grab onto these blue shapes spread throughout the levels. So you use your hands to basically grab onto the blue shapes and pull yourself forward. Your hands are also equipped with hand jets (like Iron Man?) that allow you to fly and control your fall.
“In the future, cities are not protected by superheroes, instead superheroes are built. Super Bots are human-piloted robots engineered with super powers to protect and serve the people. To The Top Academy is a training program to test your skills and see if you are capable of piloting one of these machines. So strap in and see if you can pass this challenge.”

The goal of the game is to complete the levels in the fastest time possible while picking up metals floating in bubbles and to earn certain rewards based upon the time goals you reach in each level. There’s also an online leaderboard feature so you can speed run the game and compete against others for the best time. But the developers are planning on adding a full multiplayer feature in the future, where you can race against other players.
The developers were inspired by classic platform games like the Super Mario series. “We wanted to distil what made the genre so great and bring these concepts back in a brand new way. With this in mind, we were able to bring a new level of skill, challenge, and discovery to VR. So you can come back again and again in the pursuit of bettering your skills and master the game,“ the studio said. They spent over a year fine tuning the movement system to make sure that it feels as smooth and comfortable as possible.
To The Top looks like a really fun title and I’m pretty excited to try it out. The developers describe it as an easy to learn, but hard to master game, because there is more than one way to go through a level. You also decide how much momentum you build up in the game, which should help with those who easily get motion sick. The music in the game, which, from what I’ve heard so far is pretty good, is locally sourced from artists in the surrounding area from the studio’s residence in Austin, Texas.
And while To The Top definitely isn’t like Mirror’s Edge, the easy and continuous forward movement of the game does remind me of that extremely addictive game. So if you’re into climbing/platformer games, then be sure to check out To The Top when it releases tomorrow.
