Virtual reality has its fair share of Western shooters and most of them bring pretty much the same type of gameplay with some differences in setting and gunplay. That doesn’t mean they aren’t fun, of course. We’ve had great times in games like High Noon VR and Unforgiven VR.
That being said, gamers are always looking for something that breaks the mold a little – we aren’t playing games to keep having the same experience over and over again after all. Which is where Cold Iron, an upcoming VR game from developers Catch & Release, comes in. At first glance, this game looks like your run of the mill Western wave shooter and then suddenly things get changed up with a dystopian city and a magical forest full of strange creatures.
The story involves a murdered father, revenge with a demonic pistol possessed by a hungry spirit, and a parade of deadly duelists. Not much is known about Cold Iron besides the details mentioned above and the trailer shown below. However, from the description on the game’s Steam page, the game sounds like quite the mish-mash of other games. Which sounds counterintuitive in terms of the whole ‘breaking the mold’ thing mentioned earlier, but countless developers take inspiration from others these days and create unique titles of their own. “It’s an experience that combines the boss rush gameplay of Cuphead, the white-knuckled western aesthetic of Red Dead Redemption, and the magic and mystery of The Dark Tower,” the description reads.
Check out the trailer below:
Catch & Release describes Cold Iron as a puzzle shooter that combines cunning dueling with a story full of twists and turns.
So right now we don’t know much more than that, but Cold Iron sounds like something to look forward to. Which luckily won’t be a long wait since the game releases for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift on Steam, and Playstation VR on January 30th, 2018.
