After the success of VR applications like Tilt Brush and Medium, it became clear that there’s a big market for 3D content creation. So naturally other software would follow in their wake, offering people the tools to create whatever their hearts desire. MasterpieceVR is exactly one of these titles, having now been released for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift after a couple of months in Early Access on Steam.
So why should you shell out $29.99 on MasterpieceVR on Steam or other stores instead of on Medium if you have a Rift or $19.99 for Tilt Brush? Well, in the end I think it comes down to what you want to achieve. Tilt Brush is a great tool for unleashing your creativity while Medium gives you the ability to sculpt more solid-looking objects. It seems that MasterpieceVR does, is take some of the offerings of both these tools and combine them with a simplified UI and collaboration between people on the same project – at the same time.
Check out the MasterpieceVR launch trailer below:
“We wanted to push the boundaries by creating an organic 3D modeling tool that is both powerful and easy to learn,” said CEO of Masterpiece VR, Jonathan Gagne in a statement. “VR was the medium to do this in. It let us take a big step forward in the development of a tool that let people work together in real-time to co-create on the same piece or contribute feedback or critique immediately.”
It looks to me that the creators of MasterpieceVR are aiming at a more professional crowd with this one since they’re drawing focus on the real-time collaboration that the title offers. With MasterpieceVR you can work with up to three other people on a project, at the same time – with the option to also have even more people spectate. So this is ideal for those who are working in industrial design, architectural design or a similar field that makes use of 3D modelling. The collaboration is also cross-platform as the software supports both the Vive and Rift, as well as the upcoming Microsoft headsets.
So if you just haven’t yet found a content creation tool that delivers on exactly what you want then give MasterpieceVR a try. It might just be what you’re looking for.
