Nostalgia has a peculiar effect on people. It can make you love something beyond others’ understanding, beyond reason itself even. This nostalgia certainly touches on all those who call themselves ‘gamers’. Though the level of nostalgia might differ, and certainly the game that triggers it. But it’s there nonetheless.
So what happens when an entirely new gaming platform allows us to experience iconic memories in a whole new way? Well, lots of hours of fun, I’d wager.
Cosmic Attack VR is one such a game. Or the French Indie developers behind it, Frank Quercioli and Marcel Popo hope it will be. This retro-themed VR arcade shooter makes use of a classic voxel aesthetic and alien enemies that fly through space to attack you. Of course, this isn’t the first retro-themed VR wave shooter we’ve seen and RetroGunX certainly seemed to do our old-school VR arcade memories justice. Though that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a market for it and Cosmic Attack VR goes down a bit of a different route, with much more colorful visuals and new gameplay elements besides hailing down bullets on flying UFOs.
Various bonuses allow you some leeway to get around the massive invasion by restoring some health or giving you extra lives. While others add some varied gameplay in the form of missiles, lasers, speeding up bullets, and more. You’ll also have a shield at your disposal which you’ll be able to build around you like a wall. You’ll also be Which is a great way of incorporating the immersion that VR allows. Though small gameplay mechanics like that is a ‘nice to have’ – I’m not sure it’s enough to distinguish this game from other retro wave shooters out there. Still, the game is set to offer quite the robust experience with over 50 levels that include boss fights.
Cosmic Attack VR will release on Steam and Viveport sometime later this year and is currently on Kickstarter.
