Sometimes you want to play a chemistry-oriented game to learn something new, and sometimes you just want to have a lot of fun while trying to create your own version of Flubber. Well, VR has something to offer for everyone, including a frantic science-based game show with you as the special guest, called HoloLAB Champions. Created by Schell Games (I Expect you to Die), this title will allow you to play around with virtual versions of real-life lab equipment without the hassle of worrying about your safety or investing in expensive instruments and tools.
Created with the support of the Institute of Education Sciences (part of the U.S. Department of Education) and the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, HoloLAB Champions definitely has an educational element to it, and the main focus definitely is to learn, but simply messing around to see what would happen and having fun is also perfectly acceptable.
As you progress through the gameshow, you’ll be guided by the host Earl and his sidekick Meyer to complete challenges until you reach the ultimate lab challenge – the completion of which will secure your entrance into the Hall of Brains. Since this is a gameshow-style setup, you can expect some funny reactions (both chemical and verbal) as well as a comical repartee between the host and his assistant.

It’s not all fun and games though – if you want to have a shot at winning the holo-brain trophy then you’ll have to get down to the specifics of chemistry and be accurate in the way you scoop, measure and pour your chemical ingredients. Right now, there’s not much more info available about HoloLAB Champions but we should find out more when the game releases next month.
It doesn’t look like the experience will offer any multiplayer or co-op modes, though, which would have been cool in a gameshow setup. If you’re looking for a more party-game oriented VR gameshow, then you could take a look at our review of The Incredible VR Game Show.
So don your lab coat and join this “lab stravaganza” when it releases on July 10th on Steam for HTC Vive.
