If you’re as much of a fan of RPG games as I am, then you’ll most likely have heard of The Soulkeeper VR update before. It’s a gorgeous VR RPGs in the making from developer HELM Systems and is currently in early access for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. The game first released in early access in August 2017 and we had a quick peek at what this title has to offer early on and it already showed a lot of promise for what the future of roleplaying games in VR could look like.
While only one of the various story campaigns and an arena mode are currently playable, they do a great job of pulling you into the story with good-looking characters, a sense of awe and beauty throughout the environments, and a solid progression with the storyline. However, the gameplay wasn’t all there yet – as we noted during our playthrough – which isn’t too much of a surprise since this is still early access and the VR debut title from Helm Systems.
Reworking The Game
So we’ve been waiting with anticipation to see what they do with the game, and even though they’ve been flying under the radar for the past couple of months, it seems the studio has been hard at work on improving the game because they’ve teased earlier this week that the big Early Access 2.0 release is coming soon. What that means, essentially, is that the game is getting a big overhaul of its current features, as well as new content and additional features. “We have been hard at work, putting apart all the old mechanics, even features and content, creating new while redesigning and replacing the old, all in an effort to bring a very different version, not only of our game, but also with groundbreaking features and mechanics that have not made an appearance to any other VR RPG to date,” said the development team in a Steam announcement earlier this week.
According to the studio, there are so many new features and updates coming that it will take quite a few blog posts to fill you in on all the details in the run-up to the release of the Early Access 2.0 release. So while no release date for the big update has been revealed yet, it doesn’t sound like it’s coming within the next few weeks. At least we got a few new screenshots, which you can see throughout here.
