VR can be a uniquely solitary experience, which makes games that include other a particularly fun addition to anyone’s library. No, I’m not talking about online multiplayer games, but rather local co-op VR games that let other players join in through PC monitors, like Nemesis Realms and Late For Work. The latest local co-op game to grace Steam is platformer Carly and the Reaperman: Escape from the Underworld from Odd Raven Studios.
The game introduces you to Carly – a fearless girl with a stylish bright green do who has to find her way out of the underworld by solving a range of puzzles. Along the way she meets the Reaperman, who decides to aid her in her quest out of the dark down under and help keep her out of harms way. Carly and the Reaperman: Escape from the Underworld has one player take up the role of Carly in third person through a standard display, while a second player joins in as the ever-helpful Reaperman in first-person through a VR headset.
Check out the trailer below:
You’ll travel across 40 levels in Carly and the Reaperman: Escape from the Underworld and can expect some charming moments between the two characters as you progress across the dark underworld. The player behind Carly will have to do all the running, jumping, and some of the puzzle solving, while the VR player gets to move around the world from any angle and help with moving platforms or manipulate objects so Carly can progress.
This isn’t an action platformer – meaning you won’t be encountering any enemies during your time in the underworld. Yes, it’s strange, I know. But there will be some dark denizens who try to hinder your progress by moving your previously perfectly arranged blocks and platforms so that Carly can’t progress as intended. Meaning the VR player will just have to rearrange things every now and then because there’s no real way to deal with those crafty underworlders.
Right now, Carly and the Reaperman:Escape from the Underworld only offers a local co-op mode with around 10 hours of gameplay, but the developers are planning on adding a one player mode sometime in the future. Carly and the Reaperman: Escape from the Underworld is now available on the Oculus Store and Steam for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Windows Mixed Reality, at a $24.99 US price tag.
