Created and published by Illion Interactive, Preta: Vendetta Rising is a hack-and-slash action RPG created for VR and is coming to Steam Early Access for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive on July 6. The game will be coming to PSVR as well, though no final release date has been announced for that platform yet.
Preta: Vendetta Rising looks like an early build of what future action RPGs in VR will look like. So if you have been waiting for a promising title in the RPG genre for VR then you might very well have found it.
The game takes place in the world of Akirion – a once peaceful land that’s now on the brink of extinction due to an epidemic that turns the living into things called ‘Pretas’ that crave human flesh. But the surviving members of the human race (Akirots) have started organizing militias and hiring mercenaries (like you) to defend them against the creatures.
Check out the trailer below:
So in Preta: Vendetta Rising you get to explore the world of Akirion, though the developers haven’t stated exactly how ‘open’ this world will be. Though the developers have said that you’ll get to ”explore the forsaken continents” in a press release so hopefully, we’ll finally get a lot of environments to kill ‘Pretas’ and find epic loot in.
A VR Game to Fill The Diablo-Shaped Hole in Our Hearts?
The game took stylistic and gameplay inspiration from titles like Dark Souls and Diablo and also has a co-op mode that functions similarly to the grouping mechanics of Diablo III. Players will be able to set up their character’s skills to complement the others in the group for maximum damage. According to the studio, the co-op mode will have two different avenues. You will get to choose between playing with up to four other players in ‘Co-op Multiplayer Raids’ or play through the campaign with one friend in ‘Co-op Campaigns’. Plus the game will allow for cross-platform play between VR headsets and normal flat-screen play.
As for the type of characters currently available, you can choose between being a warrior, mage, or assassin, each with their own backstory. While this trailer doesn’t show it, the game offers both first and third person view as can be seen in the game’s GDC Trailer, and what looks like arm swinging locomotion. But they might have included other locomotion options as well.
The studio also says that the current version of the game has a functioning pet system, a crafting system that allows the creation of unique weapons and items, and fully customizable skills and tech trees. They are also promising more than 50 hours of single-player campaign gameplay, which is as of yet unseen for a VR title. If the game really does offer a 50-hour campaign, then this will be one of the longest VR RPG games released to date. As an avid RPG player, this makes me really happy to hear. Preta: Vendetta Rising will also have an ‘Auction House’ system where you will be able to sell, buy, and trade your items in real-time.
So make sure to keep an eye out for the Early Access release of Preta: Vendetta Rising if you’re looking for some slicing and dicing with fantasy story elements thrown in for good measure. If you’re a bit skeptical then don’t fear, we have received access to the game and will post our findings within the next week. Keep following VR The Gamers for more info on Preta: Vendetta Rising.
