WipEout has been around almost as long as Sony’s PlayStation series. It’s been available since the very first console and has been delivering exciting anti-gravity races through various reiterations. Now, it’s finally come to virtual reality too.
Developer Sony Studio Liverpool announced last year that they will be bringing the game to VR in a free update. Which had almost every PSVR-owning WipEout fan quaking from sheer hype of course. Though no release date was announced, the studio did say that the update is due for release in “early 2018”. So when the Sony XDev said on Twitter last week that the WipEout Omega Collection update is “so close you can smell it” – we knew that the release was close.
Well, we certainly didn’t have to wait long because that update has now been released, as was announced in a blog post. The WipEout Omega Collection includes the last three releases in the series, including WipEout HD, WipEout HD Fury and WipEout 2048. So the tracks and vehicles from those game are now available in VR as well. And unlike some other PSVR ports from popular games, this isn’t just one level or a limited mode – you’ll get to experience the game in all of its high-speed glory in a full VR experience. Even the menu has been remade into a 360-degree world with ships zooming past your head for full effect.

Senior Producer at Sony XDev, John McLaughlin, also notes in the blog post that there are “three new VR exclusive ships in HD, Fury and 2048 classes for those with PS VR headsets. Look in amazement as you are placed into a cockpit and can zip around your favourite tracks from a brand new perspective.” The game now also boasts spatial audio for full immersion.
The WipEout PSVR update is free for anyone who already owns the game. Otherwise you’ll have to buy the WipEout Omega Collection to get access to the PSVR mode.
