GDC 2018 hasn’t had a lot of major VR news spilling out of the event this year, but at least we’ve gotten some more news about the Oculus Go and Vive Focus. It seems standalone headsets are set to take over the show this year. But that doesn’t mean that the team at Oculus are blowing bubbles. They’re also hard at work on improving Oculus Home even more.
In December last year, the company launched the new Home space, which arrived with the Rift Core 2.0 beta update. This update allowed players to create amazingly decorated spaces amongst a few other things. But one thing that was sorely missing was the ability to invite your friends over for a party. Or whatever it is people to together in their personal VR spaces.
That will be changing, however, as Oculus announced at their GDC session this week, that they will be adding the ability for users to join others in their Home spaces via a feature called ‘Parties’. You’ll also be able to launch apps in sync with your friends from there and head into games together, if the developers allowed that feature. Both new features coming in this update are highly anticipated since their absence in the Core 2.0 beta update felt strange in the first place. But that’s not the only improvement Oculus is adding.
While the ability to customize your space now is a great feature in Oculus Home and I’ve seen people do some great stuff with the content available; being able to import custom content would jack up the fun just that much more. Which is why that’s also now going to become a feature in Oculus Home. So while you can still mash pre-existing items together to create your own personal Oculus wonderland, the update adds the ability for talented users to create a truly unique space. Users will be able to import their content using the GLB file format and will be able to copy any items in Home on the fly. Oculus has also hinted at an in-VR tool for creating content and importing them into Home, but there aren’t any details available on that just yet.
The social content and custom content creation features are set to arrive in an update in Summer 2018.
