After being in early access for almost a year, Gunheart creators Drifter Entertainment have announced that they’re ready to release the game in full, come June 4. Gunheart is an online co-op shooter that makes you part of a team of robotic space hunters who travel to remote parts of the galaxy to off droves of alien races. Those cretins have got it coming though.
Drifter Entertainment is the baby of ex-Bungie and Epic developers who are behind some of the biggest online shooters franchises, including Gears of War and Halo. Gunheart will be their first tile for VR and it’s set to release in full on Steam for PC, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality and on the Oculus Store for Rift. PlayStation VR players won’t be missing out though, with the team planning to bring the title over to console sometime in July. I’m sure cross-platform play will also be supported.
Check out the trailer:
The main gameplay of Gunheart will take place during missions where you head out with a team of friends – or strangers if you’re up for a free-for-all – to go obliterate some extraterrestrial scum. While you might all be the space equivalent to bounty hunters, and the game does offer nine campaign missions for those who want to have the single-player experience, the real action begins when you step into battle with others by your side. The whole concept of Gunheart revolves around teamwork and how well you play with others. You’ll have to become a real team in order to snag the best loot. Then it’s time to head back to the futuristic bar that acts as the main lobby and place to meet new hunters to go out exterminating with. It’s not exactly the Cantina but I guess it’s as close as we’re going to get right now.
To keep things interesting, and keep players from learning where all the good spots and loot are, the studio has implemented what they call ‘remixing’ to all the alien planet locations you’ll visit. Which essentially means that the levels are somewhat procedurally generated and you’ll find that things are never quite exactly the same as when you visited last.
Collecting bounties lets you unlock new gear and upgrade your weapons. Gunheart features 10 weapons and over 40 weapons mods so you can go to town on those hard-shelled scum in any way you want.
So if you want the honor of going into battle on distant planets and coming back covered in green slime and victory then make sure to make some space in your schedule on the 4th of June. Gunheart is currently available in early access on Steam and the Oculus Store for $29.99 US.
