We’ve had our fair share of VR game tie-ins for movie releases this past couple of years. Some are worse than others, while some, like the Jumanji VR game just never should have existed. But it seems, even though movie tie-ins have a reputation for being bad, we won’t be seeing the end of them any time soon.
Though that might not be a bad thing in the case of exciting upcoming games like Marvel’s Powers United, which is set to release for the Oculus Rift later this month. Another company that’s giving this whole game and movie collaboration thing a shot is Sony Pictures Virtual Reality in partnership with immersive content firm Specular Theory to bring us Hotel Transylvania Popstic. This comes after the recent release of Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation which takes the monster crew on a wild trip on board a cruise ship.
While Hotel Transylvania Popstic also lets you board the cruise ship, you won’t get to hang out with all the freaky but cute monsters from the movie, but will rather get to partake in a single cruise activity – namely dancing. The game won’t be available for home play, but it is now available at over 500 VR arcades, including SpringboardVR, Private Label VR, Synthesis VR, VR World NYC and Viveland, across North America, Europe, and China.
“From the outset, Hotel Transylvania Popstic was designed to work for the growing VR arcade audience. It’s the perfect pairing of a movie brand that families love and a music rhythm game that is as fun to watch as it is to play” said Senior VP of Virtual Reality at Sony Pictures Entertainment, Jake Zim.
Check out the video below:
Hotel Transylvania Popstic lets you choose between Drac, Mavis or Johnny for a DJ and you then select songs from that character’s playlist to start showing off your VR Rhythm gaming skills. While shaking your butt to the tunes, (which has to include Michael Jackson’s Thriller or I’ll be pretty disappointed) you’ll also have to hit incoming targets and avoid obstacles, using a single HTC Vive controller and a VR peripheral developed by Specular Theory called a Stic.
“We noticed there weren’t a lot of games designed just for VR Arcades and there wasn’t a lot of games made for families — or for first-time users,” said Spectacular Theory CMO and co-founder Ryan Pulliam in a blog post. “That’s why we’re excited to feature characters from Sony Animation’s Hotel Transylvania franchise. Such a well-loved brand brings in families — and brand-new visitors. In addition, the game is simple and intuitive, which makes it easy to get started and eliminates the need for lengthy tutorials that delay gameplay and lead to long lines.”
It isn’t likely that we’ll get a chance to check this one out, so we can’t tell you whether this might be one of the better VR movie tie-ins. But if you find yourself at a theatre with one of these VR arcades then you might want to give the Hotel Transylvania Popstic a try.
Another title that recently also made its way to SpringboardVR is the wacky airport security title, TSA Frisky.
