PlayStation VR and Oculus are taking the challenge of fulfilling our gaming itch very seriously. To ease that gaming urge, prominent developer Schell Games is launching I Expect You to Die – the new proposal from PS VR and Oculus Touch this Holiday season!
Who hasn’t been amazed by 007’s tricks and stunts that allow him to barely escape from death? The possibility of being a high-level spy invokes a certain awe that we simply can’t deny! Spies are cool due to one fact: they are always on the edge of getting uncovered, and with that danger comes the ultimate price.
This virtual reality puzzle game positions you in the shoes of an elite secret agent that, by occupational hazards, find himself in deadly scenarios. As you uncover secrets in this spy story, you are trapped in situations in which you must be quick, precise, smart, and… use telekinesis to manage to stay alive.
As Javy Gwaltney from Game Informer explains in an article from his experience in a demo of the game, lots of the fun of it comes directly from the “trial and error” approach it has. We are presented with a multitude of ways to solve a puzzle, and so too, with ways to find your final demise.
And that’s in no way a bad thing as most of the enjoyment of I Expect You to Die comes from the experimentation of your surroundings. The fact that you have this abundance of possibilities give this game tons of replay value.
You are tied up or simply rendered immobile, your agent has the ability to use his hands and telekinesis to get several items from his surroundings close enough to manipulate them. The fun of taking a pocket knife, poking a hole in a smoke grenade (yes, let’s face it, we’ll all be curious about what we can do!) is unparalleled. Making your hero choke with smoke while you try to figure out how to stop this madness while a narrator with a British accent is telling you how out of place that was is simply comedy gold.
The developer, Schell Games, comes highly regarded, with previous successful titles such as Water Bears VR and Orion Trail VR. Their sense of humor and amazing immersion by using precise input in well designed virtual worlds has placed them on the VR map. Luckily for us, I Expect You to Die is no exception to this successful formula.
Quoting the words of Jesse Schell, CEO of Schell games in an interview with GamesBeat: “We started on that a couple of years ago. It was really the first serious VR project we had at the studio. It came out of an argument, which was all about what worked and didn’t work in VR. We had some people who really wanted games about locomotion. I was arguing against that. I’ve been working on VR for 20 years. Don’t do that. It makes people sick. One of the devs got really frustrated and said, ‘This is stupid. This is why VR sucks. You put on the headset. You want to feel like a superhero. What kind of superhero gets tied to a chair?”
And there you go… right on the spot! What a rush of adrenaline you feel when your favorite detective or superhero – be it Batman, 007, Jason Bourne or any other big name that comes to mind – is tied to a chair expecting to die!
The rush this creates is mixed in with highly volatile scenarios such as cars flying in cargo planes or simple offices at first glance that are rigged to death with booby traps waiting to take your life at any moment. All these elements ensure that there’s no shortage of great scenes to keep you on the end of your VR headset for a bit longer than usual.
This virtual reality game has coined some good awards already, winning the following competitions to name a few:
- 2016 Vision Summit (Vision Inspire Award)
- 2015 Proto Award (Best Gameplay)
- IndieCade 2015 (Official Selection)
- 2015 Unity Award (Finalist)
