Dungeon crawlers have been around as a genre for almost as long as modern-day gaming has existed. The genre has seen many iterations across multiple platforms and of course, has made its way to VR as well. Quite a few titles have taken their shot at combining this classic genre with the unique advantages that virtual reality has to offer, like VR Dungeon Knight and The Mage’s Tale. One action-packed title that really tries to stay true to old-school, grid-based dungeon crawler mechanics while offering a fresh perspective through virtual reality is KryptCrawler from CrazyBunch and Headup Games.
KryptCrawler was released last year for Oculus Rift and Gear VR but has now made its way to Steam for Oculus Rift and non-VR play as well. Going at $7.99 on Steam, the game offers a few hours of campaign gameplay through ten story levels with an endless dungeon crawling mode for when you’re in the mood to spend a couple of hours doing some mindless (but relaxing) grinding for loot.

CrazyBunch and Headup Games took inspiration from classic dungeon crawlers to create KryptCrawler but have updated the gameplay to fit the modern medium of VR, with dangerous traps, difficult puzzles and real-time combat in an immersive environment bringing the genre into the future. Of course, no dungeon crawler would be complete without various monster-infested locations to explore and even more loot and goodies to find for your character. KryptCrawler is no different here and will have you fighting off plenty of skeletons, spiders and more to try and find some cool new loot.
Using a combination of turn-based movement with the real-time action, KryptCrawler does demand some patience from players who aren’t familiar with this old-school type of tabletop play style. For others, it might bring back a level of nostalgia.
