Get a good grip on those teddy bears, and keep a sharp eye out for hounds. Oddbug Studios’ short but sweet side scrolling adventure, The Lost Bear, will be available just in time for Christmas. This time, on the Oculus Rift.
The PlayStation VR exclusive has enjoyed a successful few months on the platform. More importantly, it has shown us once more that 2D gaming can be successful in VR. I know, it’s an odd thing to think about. However, Oddbug Studios has delivered a great 2D experience, wrapped in a VR package.
The Second Time Around
The Lost Bear is a 2D, side-scrolling, platform game that revolves around an adorable little girl named Walnut. Lost in the wilderness, she also finds herself separated from her teddy bear. As the player, you will be controlling Walnut as she searches for her bear and an escape from the growing danger around her.
So, how does VR fit in here? As the player, you view the gameplay as a sort of spectator, watching and interacting from a theater seat. The games environment spills out around you, bridging the gap between the 2D game, and a VR experience.
The developer has stated that The Lost Bear will feature touch controller support. However, with the PSVR version only supporting the consoles gamepad, we do not know if Touch support will be any more complex in scope. Whatever the case, we will find out soon enough!
We would love to hear what you think about 2D games in VR. Has Oddbug Studios captured your interest, or has the approach left you lost in the woods?
