Model building is an art form for some, a favored hobby and a beloved pastime for others. It’s an activity that’s enjoyed by young and old alike. I mean, who could pass an Apollo 13 Lunar model or a 51D Mustang by without gazing in awe? Well, to be honest, I’m not really into model building kits myself. But a lot of people are and not everyone has the resources or space to build as many models as they want.
The developers at MADFINGER Games from the Czech Republic all love spending time building models and they decided to bring their favorite hobby to virtual reality. They call it Monzo VR and it launched as an exclusive for Oculus Rift and Gear VR yesterday.
So Just Relax and Start Building
There have been many zen, meditation and relaxation experiences released for virtual reality in the past year. And while Monzo VR does focus on the relaxation part that model building offers, I found the captivation of building a model and then getting to see exactly how that model’s mechanisms function to be the bigger draw.
However, Monzo VR does offer four ‘relaxing’ environments which the player can escape to and switch between when starting a new model. These environments include a Japanese room and an outdoor view of the mountains. “Our friends at Oculus and Gear VR have given us an amazing environment to play in. People will be amazed at the ease and comfort created by the virtual environment. Combined with the power and flexibility of the Unity Engine we have a fantastic canvas to display our player’s dreams,” said MADLead Programmer, Vojtech Jatel.
In Monzo VR you get to choose from a selection of over 30 models currently, though word has it that they are planning to add more in the future. These range from cars, tanks, and engines to the Titanic and designs from Leonardo Da Vinci. The developers also included a very detailed interface that takes you through the model building process to the finest detail. And unlike with regular model building, you won’t have to worry about hard to understand illustrations and small print.
Once you’re finished building your model, you get to paint and decorate it. It’s handy in cases where you want to put stickers on car models to get that authentic look. Or when you want to remake a real life model and get the details just right.
Monzo VR is available on the Oculus Store for $14.99, so if you’re really into model building then head on over and start putting together your Fokker Dr. 1 Dreidecker replica.
