Last year we saw an interesting Early Access title released by developer Headroom.one for Oculus Rift in the form of The Tower. It’s a platformer that takes you on a conveyor belt ride along a deadly obstacle course. And even though you’ll find the game a little ‘choppy’, The Tower went down pretty smoothly with gamers and critics alike.
This game has now brought its frenzied trip over a magic land to Steam for HTC Vive and on the Microsoft Store for Windows Mixed Reality headsets too. It’s currently available on those stores as well as the Oculus Store for $6.99 but has a 20% launch discount going on Steam, putting it at $5.59 until February 23rd.
Check out the trailer below:
Much as the description above suggests, the gameplay in The Tower simply consists of you standing on a conveyor belt and trying to evade, duck, and jump over various fatal obstacles. All of which is set up high in the air over gaping depths. So if you want to successfully reach the top of this tower, you’ll not only have to contend with dizzying heights but slicing blades, spike traps, and many other trials and tribulations.
We’ve enjoyed other games with a similar premise, such as Runaway VR, though in The Tower you’ll have to watch out for blasting cannons and spears being thrown at your head while trying to collect as many coins along the path as you can. So while the game is set in a beautiful low-poly magical world, there won’t be much time to admire the surrounding scenery or you’ll get chopped in half and will have to start again. So as the game’s trailer says, it’s pretty standard to ‘be nice’ to VR players across the board by keeping their comfort in mind, however, this game throws all that out the window.
The gameplay in The Tower is refreshingly varied, with gaps to jump over, having to use an ax to hack your way through obstacles, and making you focus on your balance across thin boards. So if you’re up for a challenging adventure across high tops and don’t mind bringing out your inner trapeze artist in virtual reality then make sure to check this game out. The Tower is available now on Steam, the Oculus Store and Microsoft Store.
