China certainly has its own brand of unique horror, and while us Westerners might not understand everything the country produces all of the time, fear is an emotion that transcends most language and cultural barriers. Which is why it should be interesting to see Chinese developers’ take on the genre through the immersive possibilities of VR.
The latest horror titles to make their way West comes from publisher Winking Entertainment who has announced that zombie shooter The Walker and escape the room title 18 Floors – both of which focus on themes from popular Chinese folklore.
Lurching Forwards With The Walker
Though The Walker doesn’t seem to be taking on much of an original idea, with zombies taking over old Shanghai. The game does take on a more unique role, aesthetically at least, with Chinese terracotta soldiers and strange abominations alike jumping at you. You’re stuck in the middle of all this with no way out other than a hail of bullets. Or you can opt to go old-school with a sword.
But those aren’t the only tools you have at your disposal. In The Walker you are the last remaining heir of a long line of exorcists, with the power to magical Chinese talismans. These talismans allow you activate elemental buffs on both your guns and sword which allow things like precision shots and the ability to shoot magical projectiles that will shock or freeze the monsters you face.
The Walker offers a story mode, as well as a challenge mode, and a rampage mode that will have you slicing through undead brains even after you’ve completed the story.
Nowhere To Go But 18 Floors Down
In contrast with the (some would say) overused zombie genre, 18 Floors takes on the concept of “18 levels of hell” in Chinese folklore. It’s an escape-the-room title that transports you through various rooms that transcends space and time. In order to escape each room, you’ll have to solve interconnected puzzles throughout each unique room, which ranges from an old world railroad train speeding across an ocean, to a fantasy forest.
18 Floors features two levels that are set to be part of a larger series. Though no more information has been revealed about what’s been planned for the series.
We’ll make sure to keep you up to date when any more info comes to light. In the meantime, if either of these two games appeal to your taste in horror then make sure to check them out on the PlayStation Store. You can get The Walker at $19.99 US, and 18 Floors is available at $14.99 US.
