Virtual reality is a wondrous new gaming platform that allows for so many varied and immersive experiences. Which is why we’re getting another magic-based wave shooter. Awesome.
The Broken Seal follows a typical fantasy trope where an ancient seal has been broken, letting the powers of evil and their minions pouring through. You play the role of the hero, of course, who has to stop them.
Now, don’t get me wrong, there’s certainly a market for fantasy-based VR games and it does feel amazing to wield magic in VR. The Wizards alone is a testament to that. And here’s where things get interesting with The Broken Seal from XAREA – the magic in the game is entirely voice-based. The concept itself isn’t entirely new. If you owned The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and an Xbox 360 with Kinect then you are probably familiar with issuing voice commands to trigger spells. It was an interesting, if sometimes frustrating experience. Even so, the immersion of VR could make the experience just that much better and more real – if the voice commands work smoothly. Because as you probably well know, things can get chaotic in virtual reality really fast.
So while flinging spells at enemies using your voice sounds like a cool prospect – I’m certainly keen to try it – this shouldn’t be the selling point of a game. Luckily, it looks like The Broken Seal offers other types of combat as well, including melee with a sword and shield, and ranged with a bow. Plus the weapons can be enchanted. As for the gameplay, The Broken Seal is a fantasy RPG with many of the genre’s classical features like XP levelling, looting, exploration, and of course, fighting all manner of fantastical beasts and creatures. The gameplay also stretches over multiple environments, including an icy winter land, forests, and a desert.
The Broken Seal just released in full on Steam for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift after releasing in Early Access last year. It’s available for $24.99 and has a 25% discount, putting it at $18.74 until February 5. So if you’re eager to test your magical voice, then make sure to give the game a try and let us know what you think!
