October is shaping up to be a great month for VR horror games. We are seeing classics being reinvented in VR, and fresh new stories coming to life. But one thing that seems to be dominating VR horror, be it good or bad, is the jump scare. That is exactly the trend that Reficul, from Mad About Games Studio, is aiming to break away from.
Personally, I am a fan of jump scares when they are done right. But some of the scariest moments I have experienced in video games came from a totally different approach. The atmosphere in Silent Hill, that first time you see a Headcrab sucking on someone’s head in Half-Life, the first zombie in Resident Evil. With so many ways to frighten players, I got a little excited when I read that Reficul wanted to give us something a little different in VR.
Everything Goes Dark
In a world that suddenly finds itself without power and with no way to communicate with each other, nightfall is something to really fear. Toss some demons into the mix and you are really in for a nightmare. In Reficul, that is the world you will find yourself in. Demons, darkness, and only your two hands and survival skills to keep you alive.
You will have some weapons at your disposal, even some holy relics to fight the big bad demons with. But Reficul isn’t just going to hand them to you on a silver platter. You will need to hunt for what you need, maintain your inventory, and explore with caution. Get caught unprepared for a fight, and it’s the end for you. That’s right, perma death!
Reficul will support teleport and traditional locomotion and is going to be available for both the Rift and Vive. The developer has also mentioned that it would like to head to PlayStation in early 2018, and possibly other platforms later that year. The early access will launch on Steam, October 31st. No pricing is available yet, but we will let you know as soon as one becomes available.
