To be honest, I’m not all that familiar with football or sports in general. I’ve never felt what it feels like to win the game for your team in the last few hot seat minutes as the crowd cheers you on. But, even though the real experience holds a lot more weight, and this image definitely leads to a lot of nostalgic feelings for some people – I can still get to see what this would be like through the power of virtual reality and developer Truant Pixel’s 2MD: VR Football.
2MD: VR Football first released for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets on Steam, but has now made its way to PlayStation VR as well. Which means PSVR players – both those who know the glory of living a real football game, and those that don’t – are all also finally getting the chance to live that experience, virtually at least.
In 2MD: VR Football you play the role of a quarterback tasked with capturing victory in the final minutes of a championship game. So the entire arcade-like experience revolves around the last two-minute drill of a championship football game where you have to draw the plays, call the shots, and finally, score a touchdown before the clock runs out. The game allows you to do this in multiple ways, by either throwing, handing-off, or running the ball to take down opponents. So essentially, you’re getting all of the action of a full American football game, in compacted single-player rounds spanning two minutes.
Check out the trailer below:
The 1:1 throwing model in 2MD: VR Football allows you to get a natural throwing motion going, using motion controllers, and supports both seated and standing positions for whatever suits your needs. If you really like throwing the pigskin around, then the game also has a mini-game bonus rounds feature that challenges you to get the highest score by rapid fire (throws).
“2MD is unique to PS VR in several ways. In addition to realistic passing, you can also hand off the ball to a runner, or even run the ball yourself. Because you have the freedom to design your own offensive plays (up to eight unique ones that can be dynamically ‘flipped’ for 16 total), you’re in complete control of your strategy before taking the field. Once there, you can call audibles using either standard digital controls, or using speech recognition if you choose. You’ll need a creative strategy, after all, because your opponents are also one-of-a-kind,” said President of Truant Pixel, Maher Al-Samkari in a blog post.
The studio has also added some new polishing features to the PS VR version, including various voice acting talents, and music by up-and-coming Hip-hop artist K.Carter. This all takes place across 8 unique stadiums, each with their own unique touchdown celebrations and thousands of screaming fans as you face off against the AI opponents. These opponents all have their own strategies and defendants (individuals or as part of the group) may change their behaviour in response to your strategy. Which means that you’ll have to keep changing things up to stay ahead of the AI and no two plays are ever exactly the same.
2MD: VR Football is available now on the PlayStation Store at a £9.99 price tag.
