Sailing across the water, feeling the breeze in your hair and the salt on your skin. Sailing is a hobby for some, a sport for others, and a simple relaxing pastime for many. But it’s also a very expensive venture that most people don’t ever get to experience. Well, luckily for them, then, that virtual reality offers us the opportunity to have myriad new experiences, not of the least some that reflect reality itself.
After more than a year of Early Access testing and being exhibited to the public at events around the world, VR Regatta: The Sailing Game has been officially released today by Australia-based indie studio MarineVerse. Available from today on Steam for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality, the game lets you sail between picturesque islands in the Caribbean. It’s available now for $14.99.
Set in the Akalana islands, a fictional archipelago inspired by beautiful real-world locations in the Caribbean, VR Regatta: The Sailing Game takes you across beautiful environment with dynamic weather patterns and a day and night cycle. There are a variety of models to choose from – including simple single-sail dinghy and a larger and more sophisticated yacht with two sails and a motor – and once you get in, all the fun starts. According to a press release, there will also be a special launch day bonus that features a new model of training sailboat, and a scorching hot equatorial location called Windy Islands to explore.

“Developing an experience like this for VR is very rewarding. No other creative medium on earth allows you to really place yourself so deeply inside something that came out of your own imagination, and then share them with others in this way. Developing for VR comes with a lot of unique challenges, too, but it’s worth it to be able to slip on that headset and enter a world that we created. We’re not done, either: this release is one step in an ongoing process. We’ll be taking VR Regatta to the world, encouraging sailing organisations to use it as a publicity and recruitment tool, and of course we’ll keep adding new features,” said Lead developer at MarineVerse, Greg Dziemidowicz.
VR Regatta: The Sailing Game features a beginner’s sailing academy for those who want to learn the art of sailing and tutorials to help players find their sea legs. There are also demanding long races and challenges for when you’ve got the hang of things and want to start your sailing adventure in earnest. According to the studio, the game also offers a career mode and multiplayer exploration and challenges. Plus you don’t have to stick to the open seas since the game has explorable islands too.
MarineVerse is made up of passionate sailors and technologists, and the team’s dedication to capturing the heart and soul of sailing has earned the admiration of several sailing organizations. The game has been demonstrated to the public at sailing exhibitions, sporting events, and trade shows around the world.
Though that’s not likely what you had in mind, the game still looks like you can have a lot of fun while learning a thing or two. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be sailing off into that Carribean sunset.
