House of Secrets has announced that their abstract platformer KIN has just arrived on the Oculus Store for Gear VR, just in time for the holidays. The game follows a tiny girl with big hair, clad in a bright dress who leaps from platform to platform, traveling through different landscapes.
Much like in their previous VR titles, APEX and Surge, the visuals in KIN are abstract aesthetics with bright colors that have become characteristic of the studio. You’ll be traveling through the remnants of an ancient civilization on a distant planet you control the tiny girl from a third person perspective. A story will unfold during your journey through these alien landscapes as you defeat enemies and solve puzzles while leaping from platform to platform.
“While not grabbing for the platformer clichés like scores and pick-ups to keep momentum going in the game, we opted instead for developing original and unique gameplay for a third person VR game that would involve as little UI as possible. All UI or game elements that are found in the game are made specifically to be part of the world of our main character and are never an overlay,” said Sven Neve & Arjan van Meerten of House of Secrets in a statement.

The developers decided to go for a simple yet challenging puzzle system that could be incorporated into a coherent design with the rest of the world and all its elements. “The design of the platforms and puzzles was part of this look, giving the player a reference point in each level. The enemy, in whatever form or shape they came, should be black as to counteract the bright character and communicate clearly they were to be defeated. The bosses could be more grand, taking over much of the viewing angle of the user, while still having interesting gameplay in VR,” they continued.
KIN will also come to the Oculus Rift in January 2018 for those who want to play it in an even higher resolution. The game is available now for Gear VR on the Oculus Store at a $9.99 price tag.
