The upcoming Jumanji reboot which stars actors like Dwayne Johnson and Jack Black, is getting a VR tie-in experience from Sony Pictures in partnership with Reality One and VRX Networks. Now, Sony Pictures is no stranger to releasing VR tie-ins with their movies, nor is it strange anymore to see a VR experience announced in anticipation of an upcoming movie.
That being said, the experiences aren’t always as satisfying as we’d like them to be. Just take Sony Picture’s release of the Spiderman Homecoming VR experience, which was arguably one of the best in the bunch, and it was still way too short and left a lot to be desired. Though, maybe they learned from their mistakes, since their partnership with The Void to create Ghostbusters: Dimension turned out great. The upcoming VR tag along to the ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ movie is being described by Sony as an opportunity to enter “a magical, fully interactive 3D jungle” where you’ll be able to take control of the characters and interact with the environment. No news on the locomotion options yet, though, and it might just be another stand in place experience.
Welcome To The Jungle
The movie follows four high schoolers who come across an old console with a game called Jumanji while cleaning a room for detention. But this isn’t a normal game (as we all know) and it sucks them all into a dangerous place where they embody their avatars.
It sounds like you’ll actually get to explore the jungle (however big the jungle will be in the game) while outwitting the evil henchmen and dangerous wildlife of Jumanji. “Our goal at SPVR is to develop the business of virtual reality,” said Sony Pictures virtual reality SVP Jake Zim. “This partnership represents another way to monetize our content while offering audiences an exciting way to dive into our movie worlds.”
Besides releasing the experience on the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Playstation VR sometime later this year, Sony Pictures will also bring the Jumanji VR experience to about 50 locations in the US and UK ahead of the movie’s release.
Sony is also working with Reality One on a VR experience for Hotel Transylvania 3, which should release just before the movie in July 2018.
