When it comes to how you get around in virtual reality, people are pretty divided. Which isn’t too strange since the platform is so new and brings with it entirely new ways of interacting with games. That said, one company is looking to throw in their two cents with the 3dRudder.
First unveiled at CES 2017, the 3dRudder is a motion controller for your feet. The 3dRudder allows you to comfortably move around in any direction in VR while still staying seated. This has positive implications for those who are unable to comfortably walk around or for anyone who doesn’t want to stand in VR for hours at a time. Plus it works well if you have limited space. Sure it takes away some of the immersion but it allows people who previously weren’t able to join in the fun.
Now, 3dRudder (the company) is unveiling a brand new version of their product called the 3dRudder Blackhawk at CES this week. The newer model has some updated features that include a new ‘Active Dead Zone’ feature and a new design with foot straps.
New Model, More Comfort
The ‘Active Dead Zone’ helps you gain better stability when coming to a standstill and reactivity when you start moving again by automatically adjusting according to your velocity. “In VR, you need stability when you stay still. But when the action heats up, when you move and change directions quickly, you need reactivity: the more intense the action, the lower the dead zone. The ‘Active Dead Zone’ will be addressable as well by game developers directly from their games,” the company said in a press statement.
As stated above, 3dRudder Blackhawk also comes with foot straps that allow for better control and less slippage. But if you own the previous 3dRudder then you need not worry because the company is also releasing two kits for that version. The ‘Foot Guide Kit’ will be going for $24/€24 and provides 2 bases to be fixed at the top of each existing pad and 2 guides to be plugged into the bases. The ‘Foot straps kit’ is going for $19/€19 and contains the 3dRudder Blackhawk wings to be plugged into the device. The company also announced in their press release that the price of the older model will have a $40 price cut which puts it at $100 when the new model releases.
As for the 3dRudder, it will ship for $139/€139 starting Spring 2018 and has following features:
Model Number: 3dRudder VR Edition 2 “Blackhawk”
Length: 13.39 inches / 34cm
Width: 13.39 inches / 34cm
Height: 4 inches / 7,2cm without the wings, 10 inches / 17cm with the wings

Blackhawk Wins CES 2018 Innovation Award
The company also received the CES 2018 Innovation Award in the “Computer Accessories” product category for their new model. Products entered in the program are judged by a preeminent panel of independent industrial designers, independent engineers and members of the trade media. “It is truly an honor to have received the CES 2018 Innovation Award for the 3dRudder BlackHawk,” said Stanislas Chesnais, CEO 3dRudder. “The new design, including LEDs and foot straps, coupled with the Active Dead zone functionality represents a step forward in the VR foot motion controller technology that we started developing 4 years ago and a new standard for all VR accessories.”
The 3dRudder works with many popular VR games, including Doom VFR and Fallout 4. It is also getting more native support from developers, with games such as Dead Effect 2 and Air Car already supporting the 3dRudder natively.
