What would it be like, to be trapped in your own mind? What monstrous or wondrous things would you see? Well, you probably won’t ever be able to travel into the depths of your unconscious. But with FORM, a strange new abstract puzzle VR game being created by Charm Games, you will be able to travel into the mind of Dr. Devin Eli.
The game has been making some noise in the VR community since its announcement last year, but we finally have a release date – June 1. Well, for episode one at least. There will be two more episodes released somewhere between now and the beginning of 2018. FORM will release for HTC Vive on Steam for $19.99. But there will be a launch discount, so you can get the game for $14.99 until June 8. But the studio says that it’s also coming to Oculus Touch soon after (date TBA) and to Playstation VR in early 2018.
Check out the trailer below:
In FORM you play the role of Dr. Eli, who is brilliant, but an eccentric scientist with a special ability. He can visualize theoretical physics patterns as geometric forms. So he can basically ‘see’ extremely complex ideas that have to do with the natural laws of physics. But he’s working on lots of new discoveries in his remote research lab in Alaska when something goes wrong and he’s sucked into his own subconscious.
“Devin faces a massive riddle in a waking dream constructed of devious puzzles built from his memories and fears that stand in the way of him discovering his true destiny.”
Delve Into The Dark Recesses Of The Mind Of A Scientist
While in the doctor’s subconscious, you have to figure your way around and, hopefully out, eventually. But not before wandering through a strange new, alternate reality that exists in the doctor’s mind. A reality that is visualized by lots of moving blocks and gears. You will have to unlock the constraints on Dr. Eli’s mind to access the deeper recesses of his subconscious, but while doing so, a story unfolds before you in various snippets of memories and thought.
This game is visually stunning, with an as of yet unknown narrative driving it throughout. The game doesn’t give you much guidance on where to go or what to do – but the puzzles are fairly intuitive. I think that’s because FORM isn’t meant to be this hard, challenging game. The experience is like going on a psychedelic journey. In fact, according to Charm Games co-founder Alan Jernigan told IGN that the focus in the game is put on the visual design and structure of Dr. Eli’s mind. And as you ascend through progressively higher levels of his consciousness, the form, colors, and shape of his thoughts change.
If this sounds like something you want (I’m definitely excited) then make sure to check FORM out when it releases on June 1. If you’re a Rift or PSVR owner, then we’ll keep you posted on when FORM releases for those platforms.
