In most VR games that allow it, you’ll usually find at least one person who like to throw everything not nailed down (or without hitboxes) to the ground. Or maybe all of us do that – I know I certainly do. But, usually, that’s not the main aim of those games, even if it’s an amusing distraction every time. Paper Valley does away with all that silliness, however, and makes throwing things around a fully-fledged part of the game. Well, not things actually, but paper airplanes. Which should double as bringing in some nostalgia too.
Announced earlier this year, VITEI Backroom debuted Paper Valley at the BitSummit event in 2017 and started out as Paper Garden but the developers later changed the name to the one we know now. It is an Oculus Rift exclusive that tasks you with rejuvenating the world around you by throwing paper airplanes using the Oculus Touch controllers.
As you throw, curl, and glide your paper planes into targets, this strange but beautiful world will come to life piece by piece, creating an atmospheric journey across a world overrun by an ancient blight. According to the developers, the game takes inspiration from many of ThatGameCompany’s games including Journey, Flower, and Flow. Which means you can expect a title that replaces traditional narrative with a more atmospheric zen-like flow.

So precision is important here because after befriending the native paper planes you have to use them to break down the mysterious monoliths responsible for the decay. Every time you hit your mark successfully, you’ll uncover more of the valley and its mysterious secrets. It may sound like a simplistic concept, but Paper Valley makes that its strength and appeals to a wide selection of gamers with its skill-based progression and visuals that try to invoke an emotional response in players.
“I’m incredibly proud of the team. Paper Valley represents the best of what we’re about: simple approachable VR gameplay, set in an imaginative and immersive world.” said CEO of VITEI Backroom, Giles Goddard. “We’re just really excited to get Paper Valley out there for all the VR enthusiasts and newcomers to enjoy!”
Paper Valley releases as an Oculus Rift exclusive today for $19.99 / £14.99 / 19,99€ on the Oculus Store. So if you’re in the mood for something a little more laid-back, that’s set in a colorful and magical world, then look no further.
