Swedish developer Orch Star Studios have announced their debut title with native VR support, a multiplayer space strategy game, which is also called Orch Star. You can see a lot of creativity went into this studio’s naming process.
The game is available now on Steam Early Access for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift at $14.99 though there is a 15% launch discount, which puts the game price at $12.74 until December 21. The game is an interesting mix of fantasy characters set in a sci-fi space setting where the various races are competing for resources and domination.
According to the studio in a press statement, the story of Orch Star goes as follows: “Years of oppression living under Human-led Mevorian Empire have finally sparked an uprising of a once powerful Orch race, yearning for revenge. Now, the Orchs are gathering forces in an attempt to bring down the Mevorians and restore their dominance in the galaxy. United under one mighty leader, Orch faction is ready to go up against not only the Human fleet but also the aeon-old Elves, high tech Pekeewans, Goblins as well as other Orchs. And so the revolution begins.”

The game offers a single-player campaign of 12 increasingly difficult missions as well as a multiplayer mode where you can play 1v1, co-op, or with up to four players in a team. Cross-platform play is also supported, which means you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding space mates to play with.
“We are thrilled to release Orch Star on Steam Early Access and especially VR for our fellow sci-fi fans to immerse in this fascinating interstellar universe”, said Michael Stenmark from Orch Star Studios in the statement. “Early Access gives us a chance to collect invaluable player feedback, which will help us improve the final user experience. Though the feature list and multiplayer mode capacity is limited at this stage, this is just the beginning. We hope that players will get a taste of what’s to come and enjoy our take on RTS genre.”
In the single-player mode of the game you play the Orch chieftain who has to send out ships to nearby planets to gain more resources to produce more ships. The game consists of strategically conquering more and more planets in order to amass an army with which to fight the human-led empire, while protecting what you have amassed from them at the same time. As the game progresses, you’ll also be able to unlock new features like Stargates and shields for planets that will influence your strategy forward.
So if you’re into sci-fi strategy games like Starcraft and Sins of a Solar Empire then Orch Star might be worth looking into.
