Spark of Light, the popular fairy-tale VR platformer from the Dutch start-up, Pillow’s Willow VR Studios, has won the Award for Best Vivewave Game during the Vive Developer Award Ceremony at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco this week.
In Spark of Light you have to help a little boy and girl called Nerow and Pillow to save their magical friends by bringing back Sun-Bug. The Moth-King abducted him which lead to the world falling into darkness and the boy’s friends losing their magical powers and falling into a deep sleep. Spark of Light released for Gear VR, Google Daydream last year. It was then also chosen as a launch title for the Vive Focus, which released almost exclusively for Chinese markets in 2017.
Since then, this whimsical title crept into the hearts of many with its adorable characters, beautiful environments, and creative puzzles. That adoration was reaffirmed this week when the studio won the award at GDC. “At the start of the development of this game we were unsure if it would be a success, even though we believed in it ourselves,” said Creative Lead, Peter Kortenhoeven, “We are totally excited with this award, and will work with even more positive flow and energy on our new games now.”
“This award is especially important because we made a clear choice to avoid violence in our games and instead build the gamer’s confidence, which wasn’t the most common or safest route to take,” said CEO, Andy Lürling. “But we really wanted to show that it is possible to create positive impact with VR games and still offer the gamer a really awesome experience.”
More Fun Is On The Way
With their debut now successfully gaining traction, Pillow’s Willow VR Studios is setting their sights on releasing more titles set in the world of Spark of Light, with Reef Quest set to release for mid and high-end devices in 2018. And another active eSports full body VR game, which is being developed for location based centres and event organizations.
Pillow’s Willow VR Studios has certainly set a high standard for their upcoming games and we wait in excitement to see what they have in store. We’ll keep you updated as more info comes to light.
