Back when Endnight Games released their survival horror game titled The Forest in early access, they also promised to bring VR support to the game. If you’re familiar with the cannibalistic island of The Forest, then you’ll also probably know that the game has been in early access for quite some time now, but it’s finally been released in full today. Along with that release, the development team also published an announcement on Steam that mentions a few updates, including the game’s upcoming first major update – which will include full VR support.
Indeed, the popular survival game will not not be getting partial VR support but the whole game will be playable in VR in its entirety. The update is set to roll around on May 22nd. According to Endnight the VR version is “it’s the most fun vr game we’ve ever played” and will allow players to use their motion controllers as hands for any in-game actions. “It’s the full game, with your hud on a smart watch, a full 3d inventory, and tree cutting using motion controls,” said the team in their post.
No supported platforms have been announced yet, but I’m venturing a guess and going with both Oculus Rift and Vive. Windows Mixed Reality headsets might also see support coming their way, but the likelihood veers towards the first two HMDs. The Forest is also set to release on the PS4 sometime, though no mention of PSVR has been made. However, I don’t see why this wouldn’t get PSVR support as well, considering the PlayStation VR’s large player base.
Into The Forest To Find Some Wood And Home Before Dark
If you’re not familiar with the inner workings of The Forest, then all you really need to know to decide if you’ll like this or not, is that it’s a crafting survival game that takes place on an island and has cannibals instead of zombies or dinosaurs. Besides the survival and crafting aspects of the game, which by themselves offer a lot in terms of content and progression, the game also has a neat story full of mystery and interesting places to explore, with an actual end – something that’s generally missing in a survival game.
When starting out The Forest, you’ll see a sequence where your character is on a plane with his kid and after some engine failure and the plane crashing onto an island, your character sees his son being hauled away by some strange-looking mutant people. Of course, the full release of the game meant new content and fixes, including an alternate ending to the story.
The Forest also allows for co-op gameplay which means, at the very least, that you’ll likely be able to play against your PC friends while in VR. No word yet on whether you’ll be able to stake cannibals or climb into cave networks along with VR players on different platforms (if the game does indeed support more than one platform), but we’re definitely eager to find out. The Forest is available now on Steam for $19.99.
